Highlights
1998
2000
- The new Apple, Dan
Knight, Mac Musings. By not showcasing hardware, Steve Jobs is
trying to teach us something important.
2002
- Way beyond AirPort, Dan
Knight, Mac Musings. Imagine the potential for high speed wireless
Internet access from space....
2003
- Jaguar on a 400 MHz PowerBook
G4, Dan Knight, 10 Forward. I upgraded to Jaguar last Friday.
Will it be good enough to make OS X my primary operating
system?
- iApps go from free to fee?,
Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Rumors are that Apple will charge for
upgrades to iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD. Does it make sense?
- WordPerfect advice, AirPort via
USB, browser feedback, the TextEdit service in OS X, and more,
Charles W. Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. Also more on PC cards,
CD-RW in iBooks and Pismos, recycling old computers, and Bible
software for the Mac.
2004
- Xserve G5. Apple's server
moves from 1.33 GHz G4s to 2.0 GHz G5s.
- DEVONthink and Boswell: Two
information managers for the Mac, Charles W Moore, Miscellaneous
Ramblings. Two very different information managers for the Mac that
you can try for free. Which will best meet your needs?
- PowerBook G4 trade-ins, iFlex,
Silent Night, bargain 'Books, and more, Charles W Moore, The
'Book Review. Apple TiBook trade-in program, SnowSeal and TiStick
cases, quieting a 12" PB G4, bargain 'Books from $665 to $1,234,
and more.
2005
2006
- iPod changes: Add video,
subtract accessories, beware scratches, Adam Robert Guha, Apple
Archive. The newest iPods add video and seem more delicate than
earlier models. Also, cost cutting has eliminated the Dock,
FireWire cable, and AC adapter.
- Low-end Mac treasure trove
found on Craigslist, Nathan Thompson, Embracing Obsolescence. A
nighttime jaunt ads a Performa 6400, Power Mac 7600, and assorted
Mac peripherals to the author's Mac collection.
- PowerBook 1400: Dated and a bit
slow, it's still very usable, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Apple's
PowerBook 1400 was considered small and quick in 1997. Today it can
still be a great little field computer.
- 15" PowerBook RAM slot failure,
laptop reliability survey, PowerBook envy, 12" iBook EOL, and
more, The 'Book Review. Also Intel Macs to be
built by Quata and Asustek, dual-core 'Yonah' iBook would trump G4
PowerBook, Imation's tiny hard drive, bargain 'Books from $230 to
$1,799, and more.

miniStack named mini accessory of the year, Bluetooth firmware
update, new Logitech keyboard and mouse for Mac, mailbox recovery
tool, and more.
2008
- 17" Unibody
MacBook Pro. Thinner and lighter than ever, the unibody
model tops out with 8 GB of RAM and a 2.93 GHz clock speed.
- No, an overgrown iPod
touch is not a netbook, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. BlackBerry
pretends its Storm is a netbook, but a netbook needs to be big enough
for a typable keyboard.
- Apple's half-baked
support for DisplayPort, Frank Fox, Stop the Noiz. The DisplayPort
specification supports audio, so why does Apple use USB to route sound
to the LED Cinema Display?
- Adventures with an
overheating PowerBook, the 10.5.6 update, and other things, Charles
Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. After three years of reliable service,
the PowerBook began to run so hot that the fan was almost always on.
What was causing the problem, and what would fix it?
2010
- 'Obsolete' tech, better YouTube on
G4 Macs, a new paint program for OS X, and more, Charles W Moore,
Miscellaneous Ramblings. Also PowerPC optimized browsers and WiFi
connection problems with a Pismo PowerBook.
- How Apple will
profit from its tablet: Mobile advertising, Frank Fox, Stop the
Noiz. Anyone can build a tablet computer, but Apple has the vision to
turn it into a profit center.
- Netbook or tablet?
It's all about the keyboard, John Hatchett, Recycled Computing. The
iPhone and iPod touch are wonderful devices, but for writing more than
a few lines, you really need a keyboard.
2011
2012
- Welcome Back to
Mac, Quicken, Steve Watkins, The Practical Mac. Quicken 2007,
widely used on Mac, broke with OS X 10.7 Lion, and Quicken finally
promises a Lion-compatible version.

many expect, dual-bay external drive shootout, and more.

Server Great for Small Offices, Insync Takes on Dropbox, and More,
Mac News Review. Also why Steve Jobs was never knighted, is technology
making the 400-year-old King James Bible obsolete?, and more.
- Happy 10th Birthday,
'Luxo Jr' iMac G4!, Low End Mac Round Table. It's hard to remember
what a breakthrough a flat panel iMac was ten years ago, but the whole
design was radical.
- Adventures
in Intel Mac Land, Part 1, John Hatchett, Recycled Computing. With
its dual-core Intel processor, the MacBook rips music and video far
faster than a G4 ever could.
