January 12 in Low End Mac History
Jan. 11 - Jan.
13
1999
- G3 Pro: Good enough?, Dan
Knight, Mac Musings. New blue & white G3 looks a bit gaudy, but
offers lots of power.
2000
- 10 years with an SE, Matt
Wolanski, My First Mac. "I got nearly ten years of use out of my
Mac SE and about 5 years use out of the Performa...."
- PowerBook 1400, a good buy,
Low End Mac. This solid performer even has a G3 upgrade
option.
- iReview reviewed, Dan
Knight, Mac Musings. "Maybe I shouldn't be disappointed that Low
End Mac didn't make the cut at iReview. I'm in very good
company."
2002
- Is OS X the unknown OS?,
Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Our server logs don't list any visitors
using Mac OS X - is it falling under "OS unknown"? If
so....
2005
- Macs in space (er, astronomy),
Jeff Adkins, Mac Lab Report. More and more astronomers are
discovering the Mac. Let's hope that leads to better Mac support
from manufacturers.
- The 'overpriced' Mac in 1989,
Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Were the Macintosh SE/30, IIcx, IIci, and
Portable overpriced in comparison to the PCs of 1989?
2006
- Four times the power makes the
MacBook Pro 'totally lustworthy', Dan Knight, Mac Musings.
Apple claims the MacBook Pro is four times as powerful at the
PowerBook G4. Then add iSight, Front Row, and a remote control, and
it's another winner for Apple.
- iPod-ready Levis, Who's
Townshend on hearing loss, iPod film festival, Wurlitzer dock,
and more, iPod News Review. Also newest Motorola
ROKR, free shipping from PodShop, lots of new iPod accessories,
iPDA software, and more.
2007
- Taking the 'Mac' out of the
Macworld Expo, Tommy Thomas, Welcome to Macintosh. Apple TV,
iPhone, the iTunes Store, 802.11n AirPort - but where's the
Mac?
- Apple TV aimed at the high end,
not the mass market, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. For most TV
watchers, TiVo or a DVD recorder makes a lot more sense than Apple
TV.
- Modbook steals show, 4.5
million MacBooks in 2007, wireless mouse for women, and more,
The 'Book Review. Also LED backlighting coming to notebooks,
SanDisk's 32 GB flash drive, firmware update fixed MacBook
shutdown, N1 Wireless from Belkin, bargain 'Books from $209 to
$1,999, and more.
- Don't mistreat your Mac, new
AirPort Extreme 5x as fast with double range, quad-core Xeons, and
more, Mac News Review. Also Macs crowding out Linux in the
workplace, Mopar expands iPod integration, first terabyte hard
drive, Nisus Writer Pro announced, and more.
2008
- 2 compact
portable USB 2.0 hubs, Charles W Moore, 'Book Value. Compact hubs
from Targus and Proporta make a great complement to your notebook
computer. Each accepts a third-party AC adapter to provide bus
power.
- The road
ahead: Snow Leopard, Windows 7, and Mac OS X 10.7, Simon Royal, Tech
Spectrum. With 'Snow Leopard' expected to be a minor upgrade to
'Leopard', don't expect significant changes until Mac OSX 10.7, which
should arrive a bit after Windows 7.
2010
- 3G wireless: The
next iPod touch and the Apple iSlate, Dan Knight, Mac Musings.
Don't expect me-too hardware from Apple. The tablet and next generation
iTouch are bound to include 3G wireless, but beyond that, expect
surprises.
- SANE Plus Snac:
An OS X scanning solution for unsupported scanners, John Hatchett,
Recycled Computing. If the manufacturer of your scanner doesn't have
drivers for your current version of Mac OS X, these freeware programs
might be the solution.
- Weather bombs,
wireless Internet, and the importance of dialup access, Charles
Moore, 'Book Value. Wireless broadband is a wonderful thing, but what
happens when the local tower loses power? Dialup to the rescue.
2011
- My latest Pismo
Adventure: Bad RAM, Charles W Moore, 'Book Value. After ten years of
mostly faithful service, the Pismo was running hot and then wouldn't
wake from sleep due to bad memory.
- CDMA iPhone 4
opens new markets for Apple, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. It's not just
for Verizon, the top US wirleess carrier. Other CDMA carriers around
the world can now embrace the iPhone as well.
