January 14 in Low End Mac History
Jan. 13 - Jan.

2000
- Skin off Apple's nose, Dan
Knight, The iMac Channel. Skinz that make Windows look like Mac
OS X - "...Apple should be flattered."
- Installing Mac OS 8.1, Online
Tech Journal. With over two dozen 6100s to update, there had to be
a better way to install the OS.
- Stealth Macs coming soon,
Anne Onymus, The Rumor Mill. What, is Apple thinking beige? Looks
like it....
2002
- Apple growing a new backbone?,
Jeff Adkins, Mac Lab Report. Could it be that Apple is undergoing a
radical mutation and growing a new backbone?
- Apple needs a revolution, not
just a new iMac, Steve, Jason Laffin, My Turn. The new iMac
looks great, but it's not revolutionary. Here's what Apple needs to
stoke the revolution.
- The new iMac value equation,
Dan Knight, The iMac Channel. How good a value are the new LCD
iMacs - and the remaining classic iMacs?
- The new iBook value equation,
Dan Knight. While the smaller iBooks are indisputably good values,
the value of the 14" iBook is entirely a personal decision.
- Microsoft loses, pigs fly, hell
cools, Broderick Sagacious, The Lite Side. Judge Motz calls
proposed settlement lame, Apple rolls out new hardware and
software.
2003
- Don't buy the new 'Books quite
yet, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Because the new aluminum
PowerBooks won't boot the classic Mac OS, you may not be able to
run your disk utilities should a problem occur.
- The new PowerBooks, Safari,
and other Apple innovations, Steve Watkins, The Practical Mac.
A killer portable presentation 'Book, a use-it-anywhere PowerBook
G4, a very polished browser, a PowerPoint killer, and wireless
connectivity.
- Choose the Right Marker When Writing on Burned Discs,
Mike Webb, Mac Lab Report. Using Sharpies and other solvent-based
markers to write on your burned CDs puts your data at risk.
- Top 10 Internet annoyances,
Jeff Adkins, The Lite Side. Blogs, pop-somewhere ads, chat room
spelling, Microsoft innovation, buzzwords, causes, and other
annoying silliness on the Web and elsewhere.
2004
2005
- Why the Mac mini may be perfect
for college students, Adam Robert Guha, Apple Archive.
Affordable, compact, and transportable, the Mac mini is perfect for
students who live away from home.
- PowerBook hinge problems,
'Books have solid fan base, the PowerS future, 3 battery monitors,
and more, The 'Book Review. Also new laptop
cases, PodBuddy, 75 million Toshiba laptop drives, ThinkPad future,
bargain 'Books from $280 to $2,409, and more.
2008
- We need more
than 2 USB ports in MacBooks, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. There's
something wrong when you can't plug a flash drive, mouse, and printer
into a notebook computer at the same time.
- Leopard almost running on Beige
G3, Word vs. Pages, overclocking an eMac, and more, Dan Knight, Low
End Mac Mailbag. Also Compact Flash and the PowerBook 190, beige G3
that won't boot Mac OS 8.1, Google less than completely Mac friendly,
and AirPort drivers.
- DRM in Mac OS X, Ubuntu and BSD as
alternatives to OS X, the power of Eudora, and more, Charles W Moore,
Miscellaneous Ramblings. More thoughts on Apple's digital rights patent
and OS X, free non-DRM alternatives to OS X, Eudora and dialup, and
adding AirPort to a white iBook.
2009
- Psystar spews more
nonsense in its bid to commoditize the Mac, Dan Knight, Mac
Musings. Psystar claims it has a right to install and resell OS X on
computers because it legally purchased copies. That violation of
copyright could eventually ruin the Macintosh.
- Overheating PowerBook, 7200 rpm in
a G3 iMac, getting online during blackouts, and more, Charles
Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. PowerPC support in iLife 09 a pleasant
surprise, no overheating issues with 7200 rpm drive in an iMac, and
dialup access as a good backup plan for power failures.
- Apple announces
Mac OS X licensing, Anne Onymus, Rumor Mill. Apple decided it would
rather switch policies than fight Pystar and others. OS X licensing
program could change Psystar's future.
2010
- The Apple monopoly
is different, Frank Fox, Stop the Noiz. Apple doesn't build its
monopoly the way most companies do. Instead of competing on price, it
grows by offering better designed products.
2011
- Verizon CDMA iPhone 4 has hotspot,
US tax app for iPad, depression screening app, and more, iNews
Review. Also CDMA iPad coming, credit card swiper app for iPhone, 12x
telescope for iPhone 4, iLuv preps cases for Verizon iPhone, and
more.
- OS X 10.6.6 runs cooler,
widescreen laptop conspiracy, the cost of phantom power consumption,
and more, Mac News Review. Also SSDs benchmarked, mBrace handle for
MacBook Pro, HyperMac batteries again compatible with MacBooks, and
more.
- Intel to pay nVidia $1.5
billion, how much drive space do you need?, TextEdit for writing, and
more, Mac News Review. Also Mac App Store versions of TextWrangerl
and BBEdit 'partly crippled', Kindle 1.2.3 for Mac, three App Store
exclusives, and more.
