Low End Mac's Birthday
April 6 - April

Highlights
- 1997: Low End Mac begun.
- 1997: Mac OS 7.6.1 released.
- 2009: Nehalem Xserve
introduced, last version of Apple's dedicated server.
1969
- The
first RFC was published, which paved the way for creation of the
Internet. Some call this the birth of the Internet; we see it as the
Internet's conception.

2005
- A few good reasons to have
antivirus software on your Mac, Dan Knight, Mac Musings.
"...the fact remains that we live in a connected world, so the only
responsible thing to do if your Mac interacts with Windows PCs is
make sure it doesn't turn into 'Virus Mac'."
- No iPod killer ever, HP PC
with iPod dock, Tunestir FM tuner/transmitter, Shufflemate, and
more, iPod News Review. Also iPod shuffle's
quality components, Canada's iPod tax, iPod mini in the shower,
iVault iPod shuffle armor, ToughSkin iPod protection, and much
more.
2006
- Apple joins 'Win on Mac' army
with Boot Camp, Alan Zisman, Mac2Windows. The hackers did it
first, but Apple's Boot Camp is a much more elegant solution to
putting Windows XP on Macintel hardware.
- DOS cards, x86 emulation, Boot
Camp, and the future of Windows on Macs, Adam Robert Guha,
Apple Archive. Macs have had DOS compatibility since 1987, and
software emulators followed in a few years. With Boot Camp, Intel
Macs can now run Windows XP. Where next?
- New homes for 3 WallStreet
PowerBooks, Thomas Ahart, The Productive Mac. Although they may
need a little restoration work, these are fine machines for using
the classic Mac OS in the field.
- 13" widescreen MacBook coming?,
5400 vs. 7200 rpm notebook drives, MacBook Pro issues, and
more, The 'Book Review. Major League Baseball online, lesson of
$100 laptop, slot-loading drive in a white iBook, bargain 'Books
from $300 to $2,399 (refurb 2.16 GHz MacBooks!), and more.
- Repair permissions not
recommended, OS X 10.4.6 update, Mac mini fails Final Cut Studio,
and more, Mac News Review. Also TVMini HD now available from
Apple Store, Keyspan RF remote for Front Row has 60' reach, next
gen Deskstar hard drives announced, PC-Mac-Net FileShare reaches
version 6, and more.
2007
- Used Intel Mac mini
vs. 867 MHz Power Mac G4 dual, Mark Garbowski, My Turn. Can a dual
processor Power Mac hold its own against a Core Duo Mac mini?
- At play in the garden
of OS X browsers: Safari 3.1, Opera 9.27, and iCab 4.01, Charles
Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. "In some respects, the browser wars are
over in the sense that just about all of the alternatives are now
satisfyingly fast and stable...."
- At play in the garden of
OS X browsers: Firefox 3 Beta 5, Charles W Moore, Miscellaneous
Ramblings. "I've not traditionally been much of a Firefox fan, but Beta
5 is the slickest, most polished Firefox browser ever, not to mention
the fastest and prettiest."
- Millions vs.
thousands of colors: What's the difference?, Dan Knight, Mac
Musings. Once again Apple is being sued over a Mac that can display
'only' 262,144 colors per pixel, not the millions it claims. Does it
realy matter?
2009
- Xserve (Nehalem). Apple moves
its server to Intel's powerful Nehalem architecture.
- 12 years of
Low End Mac, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Twelve years ago, I put a
handful of Mac profiles on my personal website. Today hundreds of
thousands visit the site every month.
- A dozen
years of Low End Mac, Charles W Moore, 'Book Value. Charles Moore
reflects on 9-1/2 years of writing for Low End Mac.
