May 19 in Low End Mac History
May 18 - May 20
Highlights
1999
- A student Bill of
Rights, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. "What happened in Littleton
was inexcusable, but it was also a consequence of students being
dumped on by their peers."
2001
2003
- Upgraded beige G3 problems, more
on OS X on the beige G3, OS 9.2 on pre-G3 Macs, and more,
Charles Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. Also PB hard drive
replacement, a 'fragile' Power Mac, Redux, boot floppy for a
SuperMac, USB with OS 8.1, and a PCI modem that works in Macs.
- More on the Print Center,
HyperCard alternatives, value of the Core Crib, and still more,
Dan Knight, Low End Mac Mailbag. Also questions about flashing a PC
Radeon, slave drives on the Rev. A beige G3, "obsolete" software,
and DVD screen capture.
2004
- eMacs, 12" 'Books, and the Mac
legacy, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. "...in terms of value and that
'just right' all-in-one integration that Apple began to perfect
with the original Macintosh, it's hard not to find the eMac and 12"
'Books excellent values."
- There's more for Mac users in
superstore aisles than many realize, Alan Zisman, Mac2Windows.
Although the staff might not know it, most superstores have plenty
of printer, mice, keyboard, drives, and other items compatible with
Macs.
2006
- Smart design and easy drive
replacement will make the MacBook a winner, Adam Robert Guha,
Apple Archive. Although the graphics processor is far from
state-of-the-art and the screen is very reflective, everything else
about MacBook points to it becoming a huge success.
- Glossy MacBook screen, MacBook
keyboard, fix for MacBook Pro heat problems, and more, The
'Book Review. Also inside the MacBook, positive 17" MacBook Pro
reviews, third-party power supplies, Hitachi's notebook 'drive of
steel', bargain 'Books from $1,000 to $2,199, and more.
- Symantec says buy a Mac,
SheepShaver supports Classic on Macintel, painted minis, and
more, Mac News Review. Also email on a Mac Plus, firmware
updates for Intel iMac and mini, $159 G4/933 MHz upgrade, FW800/USB
2.0 to SATA bridge board, and more.
2008
- The roots of
Apple's retail stores, Tom Hormby, Orchard. A big problem for Apple
in the late 90s was indifferent big box retailers. Apple's "store
within a store" in CompUSA was just the beginning.
- Charles Moore's top
10 freeware list for Mac OS X, Charles W Moore, Miscellaneous
Ramblings. Top choices in free browsers, text editors, image editors,
search utilities, system maintenance, and more.
- My first iMac,
Carl Nygren, My First Mac. There were a couple of Bondi blue iMacs in
school that weren't even plugged in. Intriguing....
- AirPort Base Stations rock,
Sawtooth upgrades, when Leopard is not the way to go, and more, Dan
Knight, Low End Mac Mailbag. Also running PowerBooks from Compact Flash
and getting Leopard on Macs with PCI graphics.
2009
- Mac 'Book power
management adventures, Charles W Moore, 'Book Value. If your 'Book
won't power up, shuts down while your working, or has other power
issues, resetting its internal power manager may clear things up.
- Choosing my next
low-end desktop Mac, John Hatchett, Recycled Computing. The
recently deceased iBook G4 was going to take up desktop duty. Now the
options are a G4 iMac, 17" PowerBook, Power Mac G4, and Power Mac
G5.
- Could iPods become the
next hearing aids?, Tim Nash, Taking Back the Market. Baby Boomers
have reached the age where hearing loss is a growing problem, and iPods
don't have the stigma that hearing aids do.
