September 6 in Apple and Low End Mac History
Sept. 5 - Sept.
7
Highlights
1999
- G4 vs. Pentium III, Dan
Knight, Mac Musings. The Wintel world cries "foul" over claims the
G4 is twice as fast.
- Target promotes hip hues,
iMac Channel. Lime, blueberry, watermelon, grape. No tangerine.
Possibly iMac inspired?
2000
- Setting up a server, Maxwell
Martin Cabral, My Turn. It's not hard to set up an older Mac as a
networked file server.
2002
- Norton Utilities warning,
Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Norton Utilities has served me well for a
decade, but booting from the 7.0 CD created no end of
problems.
- The 10 greatest computer
annoyances, Adam Robert Guha, Apple Archive. Application and
system crashes, misplaced menu items, programs and peripherals
incompatible with your new OS, and more.
- Screen repair, iBook hard drive
upgrades, MPEG-4 converter, bargain 'Books, and more, Charles
Moore, The 'Book Review. Also Apple's new "back to school" iBook
discount, e-pac laptop case, Magma two-slot expansion chassis for
PowerBooks, and Nisus email list.
2006
- iMac Core 2 Duo.
Apple has moved the iMac to Core 2 Duo CPUs, increased processor speed,
and added a whopping 24" model - and a US$999 entry-level one.
- Mac mini Core Duo. The
Core Solo Mac mini has been eliminated, and the speed of both models
has been increased with no change in price.
- The iMac Core 2 value equation:
Practically perfect pricing, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. The new
iMacs, build with Core 2 Duo processors, are a great value - and
refurbished prices on the older Core Duo models are right where they
should be.
2007
- Apple seduction: The iPhone and
iPod touch, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. They're not the kind of thing
a lot of people need, but they are the kind of thing a lot of people
want. Including me. This may be Apple's most seductive product
ever.
- A history of the
iPod: 2005 to present, Tom Hormby and Dan Knight, Orchard. How
Apple changed the iPod with flash memory, tiny screens, video support,
touch technology, and OS X.
- Upgrading a Power Mac G4, used Mac
dealers, Tiger on a blue and white G3, and AAUI, Dan Knight, Low
End Mac Mailbag. Questions about upgrading a Mirrored Drive Doors G4,
dependability of used Mac dealers, and the wisdom of installing Mac OS
X 10.4 on a blue and white G3. Also comments on AAUI.
- Apple intros iPod touch, iPod
classic, video iPod nano, slashes iPhone price, and more, iNews
Review. Also Apple teams up with Starbucks, $200 iPhone outrage, an AIM
client for the iPhone, a mini jukebox for iPod and iPhone, and
more.
