October 15 in Apple and Low End Mac History
Oct. 14 - Oct.

Highlights
1990
- Apple rolls out three new models. The Macintosh IIsi is intended as a lower
cost alternative to the 3-slot IIci. The Macintosh LC is Apple's lowest cost color
model to date. And the Classic updates the 8 MHz
all-in-one black-and-white compact Mac while elminating the expansion
slot the Mac SE had.
1997
- Yale threatens to drop Mac
support, Dan Knight, MacInSchool. "It certainly looks like a
conflict of interest to ask Intel for a handout and develop a
pro-Intel IT policy at the same time."
1999
2001
- Is Microsoft the enemy?,
Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Is Microsoft's dominance of personal
computing a bad thing? If so, what can we do about it?
- Other things Dell did first,
Jeff Adkins, The Lite Side. Important Dell firsts - besides the
first portable with integrated wireless networking.
2002
- Confessions of a Mac to PC
convert, not by Valerie G. Mallinson, The Lite Side. This isn't
quite the version Microsoft had posted on their site - must have
been an early draft.
- A look at the IT job
market, Steve Watkins, The Practical Mac. "Jobs are harder to
come by, and the Information Technology sector has not gone
unaffected."
- Faster isn't always better,
Jeff Adkins, The Lite Side. Apple's iMac vs. Gateway's Profile 4 -
some things are more important than flat out speed.
2003
- Microsoft's holding pattern,
Stephen Van Esch, Mac Scope. Development of Internet Explorer and
Windows seems stuck while Apple keeps improving Safari and OS
X.
2004
- October 1990: Apple unveils the
first low-end Macs, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Fourteen years
ago, Apple introduced the first sub-$4,000 Mac II, first sub-$2,500
color Mac, and first sub-$1,000 all-in-one Mac.
- Image previews, one more place
where Windows trumps Macs, Adam Robert Guha, Apple Archive.
Windows may have more viruses, spyware, and crashes, but it also
does some things better than Macs. Image preview is one of
them.
- Dual core 'Books; cooler,
quieter laptop drives; beverage spills; iMac G5 for almost all; and
more, The 'Book Review. Also a lighter car/air
power adapter, new USB Bluetooth adapter, 17" PowerBook
touchscreen, Griffin's PodPod, Sharp's ultralight, bargain 'Books
from $100 to $1,699, and more.
2007
- When to pick Tux over Windows
and Mac OS X, Keith Winston, Linux to Mac. There are two areas
where Linux wins over Macs and Windows: the cost and flexibility of a
Linux-based server and the verifiably high levels of security.
- Is the SteelSeries 4D the best
mousepad ever?, Charles W Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. This large,
double-sided mousepad was optimized for gamers, but it makes a fine
addition to any mouse user's work area.
- Upcoming expiration of Boot Camp
does not mean Windows will stop running on OS X 10.4 Macs, Alan
Zisman, Mac2Windows. Although the Boot Camp Assistant may stop running,
your Boot Camp setup and Windows installation will continue to
function.
- On the irrational rantings of an
Intel hater, Dan Knight, Low End Mac Mailbag. Readers weigh in on
last week's 'Bastard Offspring' article concerning Intel-based
Macs.
2008
- The October
2008 MacBook value equation, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Apple changed
the entire MacBook lineup on Tuesday. How do close-out prices compare
to the new ones?
- The good, the bad,
and the ugly of AppleDesign, Charles W Moore, Miscellaneous
Ramblings. Apple has produced some beautiful computers and iPods over
the years, but also a few of the ugliest and most ungainly computers
ever seen.
- G3 and low end G4
Mac performance comparison, Simon Royal, Tech Spectrum. Factors that
impact performance are the version of CPU, the size and speed of the
Level 2 cache, and how much RAM is installed.
- 3 reasons to use a Mac, and Pismo
troubleshooting, Charles W Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. Why one
Windows user is also a Mac user, a Pismo that can't see its AirPort
card, and sources of kernel panics.
2010
- iPad 'sort of' impressive, cell
phone health risk, Line2 turns iPod touch into mobile phone, and
more, iNews Review. Also Microsoft promises Mac support for Zune
and Windows Phone 7, Energizer case addresses smartphone 'power
deficit', $5 iPad stand for charity, and more.
- MacBook Pro 'Computer of the
Year' again, OWC's 120 GB SSD reviewed, dual-core Acer netbooks,
and more, Mac News Review. Also the need for a MacBook docking station,
firmware update fixes charging problem for 2007/08 'Books and new
MagSafe adapters, and more.
- Apple to preview Mac OS X 10.7
on October 20, new Macally iKeySlim USB 2.0 keyboard, and more, Mac
News Review. Also five features you'll love when switching to Mac, new
wireless mouse and metal mouse mat from Razer, ToyViewer and Dragon
Dictate for Mac updates, and more.
