Who Still Buys CDs?

- 2011.09.14

I mean, really!? We are all modern folks here, and we download music files from the Internet and distribute them from our main computers to all our portable devices. Join the twenty-first century, dude!

I buy CDs.

Why, you ask? Because I like having a hard copy. I like having an electronic file that is free from DRM. I like have the fidelity that comes from having the original music before it is compressed.

I know, it's not like you can tell, but it's nice to have that option. But the real reason I like buying CDs is the cover art and information packet.

Wayback MachineIf we could enter the Wayback Machine and go back to the late 60s and early 70s, you would find me over by the stereo at any party, reading and looking at the record album covers. Maybe that's why I didn't get married until I was twenty-five. But I digress....

Richard Thompson's Dream AtticTake the last CD I bought, Richard Thompson's Dream Attic. With all the info from the CD, I know all of Richard's new band members' names and instruments, where the live recording was made, and have neat pictures of Richard playing his custom Danny Ferrington guitar.

I suppose I should explain who Richard Thompson is....

Remember the sixties? Fairport Convention, an English rock band featuring the vocal talents of Sandy Denny - also possessing a young and exciting guitarist named Richard Thompson. I admit that I just don't follow Justin Bieber or the Jonas Brothers, but I am up for aging sixties hipsters. But I digress....

So I like CDs, and I also like albums that people leave at the curb for the dump truck to pick up - albums by Yes, The Doors, The Who, The Talking Heads, Terence Trent D'Arby, Neil Young, The Beatles, Aerosmith, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, R.E.M., Peter Gabriel, Robert Palmer, The B-52s, The Eurythmics, Joe Jackson, Carol King, Bad Company, and The Eagles. I don't think I wouldn't explain who they are, since many of you kids might know. Besides, I get enough grief from my daughter about Lady Gaga.

So keep on recycling.

I have just located a new position at a Community Action Program agency aiding the elderly with computer use. All they have are PCs with Windows XP. Hopefully I can pick up some old Macs to give the elderly easier to use computers. LEM
