Apple's Statement on Overwhelming iPhone 4
Preorders
Apple and its carrier partners took preorders for more than 600,000
of Apple's new iPhone 4 the first day it was available for preorder.
This is the largest number of preorders Apple has ever taken in a
single day and is far higher than Apple anticipated, resulting in many
order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away
or abandoned the process in frustration. Apple issued and apology to
anyone who encountered difficulties and hopes that they will try again
or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.

AT&T: iPhone 4 Preorders 10x Higher than iPhone
3GS
AT&T issued the following statement last Wednesday:
"iPhone 4 pre-order sales yesterday were 10-times higher than the
first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3GS last year. Consumers are
clearly excited about iPhone 4, AT&T's more affordable data plans
and our early upgrade pricing.
"Given this unprecedented demand and our current expectations for
our iPhone 4 inventory levels when the device is available June 24,
we're suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders
we've already received.
"The availability of additional inventory will determine if we can
resume taking pre-orders.
"In addition to unprecedented pre-order sales, yesterday there were
more than 13 million visits to AT&T's website where customers can
check to see if they are eligible to upgrade to a new phone; that
number is about 3-times higher than the previous record for eligibility
upgrade checks in one day.
"We are working hard to bring iPhone 4 to as many of our customers
as soon as possible."

The iPhone 4's 'Retina' Display
PR: Apple says that thanks to the Retina display, everything
you see and do on iPhone 4 looks amazing, with text in books, web
pages, and email crisp at any size, and images in movies and photos
stunning at almost any angle, because the Retina display's pixel
density is so high that your eye is unable to distinguish individual
pixels.
By developing pixels a mere 78 micrometers wide, Apple engineers
were able to pack four times the number of pixels into the same 3.5"
(diagonal) screen found on earlier iPhone models. The resulting pixel
density of iPhone 4 - 326 pixels per inch (PPI) - makes text and
graphics look smooth and continuous at any size.
The iPhone 4 Retina display uses technology called IPS (in-plane
switching) - the same technology used in the Apple LED Cinema Display
and iPad - to achieve a wider viewing angle than on typical LCDs. Which
means you can hold iPhone 4 almost any way you want and still get a
brilliant picture. In addition, the Retina display offers four times
the contrast ratio of previous models, so whites are brighter and
blacks are darker.
Made from "the same materials used in helicopters and high-speed
trains," the Retina display glass is chemically strengthened to be
harder, more scratch resistant, and more durable than ever, and also
features an oil-resistant coating that helps keep the screen clean.
The Retina display includes LED backlighting and an ambient light
sensor that intelligently adjusts the brightness of the screen for
optimal viewing and battery life.

9 to 5 Mac's Mark Gurman says:
"With the launch of Apple's iPhone 4 and its gorgeous retina
display, it's a high probability that Apple will soon update their
other iOS devices with better displays as well. Perhaps you don't need
326 PPI on a device that is meant to sit on your lap? Nonsense!
"We have some that evidence of an iPad with a retina display is in
the works, and this evidence comes from Apple's own Developer SDK
documents...."
Editor's note: The iPhone 4's Retina display has 2.5x the linear
pixel density of the iPad - 326 ppi vs. 132 ppi. Since the iPad will
tend to be used at a greater distance, it wouldn't need the same
density as the iPhone. Bringing resolution past 200 ppi would probably
be adequate to give the iPad comparable image quality, which would mean
a native resolution of 1536 x 1152 (vs. 1024 x 768 on the current
iPad). Doubling to 264 dpi would be more than enough, requiring a 2096
x 1536 screen. dk

New York Assemblyman Calls for Ban of iPhone 4
Video-Calling from the Road
New York Magazine reports that New York State Democratic
assemblyman Felix Ortiz - who sponsored New York State's landmark 2001
"hands-free" cellphone law and legislation banning text messaging - is
advocating that the iPhone 4's "FaceTime" video-calling feature be
banned from the roadways.
Editor's note says: Sounds like a no-brainer to me, along with
banning all other sorts of cellphone and texting distractions while
driving - "hands-free" devices included, since research indicated that
they pose no less a hazard to attention than handhelds. See "Hang Up and

DisplaySearch: iPad Munching Netbook Sales
The Register's Cade Metz reports:
"Yes, the iPad will munch the netbook market, according to research
firm DisplaySearch.
"With a new report released on Tuesday, DisplaySearch says that
Apple shipped 700,000 iPads into the channel during Q1, accounting for
6.5 per cent of the combined netbook-tablet market by volume, and in
Q2, the firm says, that share will rise to 30 per cent."

Andrew's Parish Church in West Lothian, with a regular live service
"[The church] believes it is the first to stream its services in

attendance with online participants. The church has had a Flash stream
for a while, but added an iPhone-compatible stream for mobile devices
for its service on 13 June....
"'I think it is amazing how the church is getting to that stage
