iFixit iPhone 4 Teardown
PR: We had a blast taking apart the new iPhone 4. Apple
definitely spent time giving the phone a thorough makeover,
meticulously changing every little facet. We are happy to splay the
fruits of their labor for your enjoyment!
iph4explo.jpg
Our findings:
- Like the iPhone 3G and 3GS, there are two silver Phillips screws at
the bottom of the phone. But removing these screws releases the rear
case instead of the front glass, giving you immediate access to the
battery.
- Unfortunately, the LCD panel is very securely glued to the glass
and digitizer. If you break the glass, you'll have to replace the
glass, digitizer, and LCD as a single assembly.
- The 3.7V, 1420 mAh Li-Polymer battery is not soldered in place, and
very easy to remove.
- iph4cam.jpg
- The iPhone 4 sports two cameras - a 1.3 MP front-facer, and a 5 MP
beauty on the back. Both are located on their own independent boards,
making it possible to physically remove the cameras without damaging
the phone.
- The phone uses the 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 core, much like its bigger
sibling, the iPad.
- Unlike the iPhone 3GS and iPad - which are both equipped with 256
MB of RAM - the iPhone 4 has a whopping 512 MB.
- The AGD1 is the new 3 axis gyroscope that we believe is designed
and manufactured by ST Micro for Apple. The package marks on this
device do not appear to be the currently available commercial part,
L3G4200D.
- In what can only be described as a work of genius, Apple has
integrated the UMTS, GSM, GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth antennas into the
stainless steel inner frame.
- Broadcom provides both a
BCM4329FKUBG 802.11n with Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and FM receiver and a
BCM4750IUB8 single-chip GPS receiver.
- We've identified chips from Broadcom, Cirrus Logic, Numonyx,
Samsung, ST Micro, Skyworks, Texas Instruments, and TriQuint.
logicboardconn.jpg
Chipworks will be performing a more detailed analysis on the chips
we've uncovered. We'll keep you posted with any exciting
developments!
As always, we're happy to answer any questions you have regarding
the iPhone 4.
Thanks,
Luke

Apple Releases iOS 4
PR: With over 100 new features, the free iOS 4 software is
now available for download from Apple.
While everyone else was busy trying to keep up with iPhone, we were
busy creating amazing new features that make iPhone more powerful,
easier to use, and more indispensable than ever. The result is iPhone
4. The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone.
People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4
makes it a reality. With just a tap, you can wave hello to your kids,
share a smile from across the globe, or watch your best friend laugh at
your stories - iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over WiFi. And it works right out
of the box. No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun.
iPhone 4 has two cameras: One on the front, which focuses on you.
And one on the back, which focuses on everything else. FaceTime lets
you switch back and forth between them at any time during a video call.
All you have to do is tap a button.
The Retina display on iPhone 4 is the sharpest, most vibrant,
highest-resolution phone screen ever, with four times the pixel count
of previous iPhone models. In fact, the pixel density is so high that
the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels. Which makes
text amazingly crisp and images stunningly sharp.
iPhone 4 introduces a whole new way of multitasking. Now you can run
your favorite third-party apps - and switch between them instantly -
without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining
the battery unnecessarily. This smarter approach to multitasking is
available only on iPhone.
Shoot your own movies in high definition. Capture impressive video
even in low-light settings, thanks to the advanced backside
illumination sensor and built-in LED light. Then edit and create your
own mini-masterpiece right on iPhone 4 using the new iMovie app - with
Apple-designed themes, titles, and transitions. It's coming soon to the
App Store for $4.99.
iPhone 4 is the always-with-you HD video camera. iMovie lets you
make polished movies right on iPhone 4.
Take beautiful, detailed photos with the new 5-megapixel camera with
built-in LED flash. The advanced backside illumination sensor captures
great pictures even in low light. And the new front-facing camera makes
it easy to take self-portraits.
More iOS 4 Features
- Multitasking: Now you can run your favorite third-party apps
- and switch between them instantly - without slowing down the
performance of the foreground app or draining the battery
unnecessarily.
- Folders: Organize apps into folders with drag-and-drop
simplicity. Get faster access to your favorites and browse and manage
up to 2160 apps.
- Better Mail
- See messages from all your accounts in a unified inbox, organize
messages by threads, open attachments in third-party apps, and
more.
- iBooks: More than a great ebook reader, iBooks is also an
amazing place to browse and shop for books, day or night.
- Create playlists: Create custom playlists right on your
iPhone.
- 5x digital zoom: Get closer to your subjects by zooming in
up to 5x.
- Tap to focus video: While shooting video, tap the display to
choose where to focus.
- Faces and Places in Photos: View photos based on who's in
them and where they were taken.
- Home Screen Wallpaper: Change the background wallpaper on
your Home screen.
- Gift apps: Send apps as gifts to your friends or
family.
- Spell checking: A built-in dictionary automatically suggests
words and corrects spelling. It works in Mail, Notes, and other
apps.
- Wireless keyboard support: Pair a keyboard based on
Bluetooth wireless technology with your iPhone.
System requirements: iOS 4 works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and
iPhone 3G. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For
example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone
3GS.

Some iPhone 4 Displays Have Yellow
Discoloration
Gizmodo reports:
"There is a problem with the iPhone 4's Retina displays: Some
screens have a yellow tint across its surface. 55 cases [Updating Live]
and counting. In some, it's a yellow band. In others, yellow
spots...."

Yes, You Can Scratch the iPhone 4
Engadget's Laura June says:
"Well, this is not encouraging. The photo you're seeing above is our
leader Joshua's iPhone 4 review unit, snapped by Ryan Block just
moments ago. Ryan pointed out that there are some nasty scratches on
the back of the phone. While we don't have any better photos of it at
the moment, Josh told us that they're hard to see unless in bright
light, but they look pretty notable to us for a five day-old unit made
of Gorilla Glass...."

iPhone 4 Breaks in Drop Test
iFixYouri's Chris reports:
"About a week ago a few of the techs and I decided to drop test an
iPhone 4 to test screen damage resistance (we had a full iPhone, minus
the motherboard). This test came under scrutiny since there was no
video proof and the iPhone parts used were questioned. We did not use
any hammers, ice picks, or axes to break it. Just gravity. We did not
throw it or spike it.
"We told everyone that once we have a full iPhone, functioning, we'd
be posting a video of us drop testing....
"Well, the day has come, we have a complete working iPhone, straight
from Apple, in our hands today. We disassembled it, took some pictures,
reassembled it, showed that it works and that it is a functioning
iPhone in the video. This video is completely unedited. What you are
about to see is heart breaking. Our next step will be to perform an
iPhone repair to show how we can clean up a broken iPhone 4 screen when
suffering glass damage."

iPad at the Heart of a 2006 Mustang
The Mustang Blog's Matt Rigney says:
"Apple's latest gadget, the iPad, is
an amazing product to say the least with an unlimited amount of
possibilities and uses for just about any situation or need. A need
that has not gone totally overlooked by the tech world was the
possibility of installing it in your car and making it work. Well, one
forum member by the name of "koach" over on Stangnet.com took it upon
himself to install an Apple iPad into his 2006 Ford Mustang GT and the
end result is nothing short of greatness as it looks like the iPad was
made for the Mustang's dash...."

Adults as Likely as Teens to Text While
Driving
PR: Adults are just as likely as teens to have texted while
driving and are substantially more likely to have talked on the phone
while driving.
In addition, 49% of adults say they have been passengers in a car
when the driver was sending or reading text messages on their cell
phone. Overall, 44% of adults say they have been passengers of drivers
who used the cell phone in a way that put themselves or others in
danger.
Beyond driving, some cell-toting pedestrians get so distracted while
talking or texting that they have physically bumped into another person
or an object.
Some of the key findings from a new survey by The Pew Research
Center's Internet & American Life Project:
- Nearly half (47%) of all texting adults say they have sent or read
a text message while driving. That compares with one in three (34%)
texting teens ages 16-17 who said they had "texted while driving" in a
September 2009 survey
- Looking at the general population, this means that 27% of all
American adults say they have sent or read text messages while driving.
That compares with 26% of all American teens ages 16-17 who reported
texting at the wheel in 2009.
- Three in four (75%) cell-owning adults say they have talked on a
cell phone while driving. Half (52%) of cell-owning teens ages 16-17
reported talking on a cell phone while driving in the 2009 survey.
- Among all adults, that translates into 61% who have talked on a
cell phone while driving. That compares with 43% of all American teens
ages 16-17 who said they had talked on their phones while driving in
the 2009 survey.
- Half (49%) of all adults say they have been in a car when the
driver was sending or reading text messages on their cell phone. The
same number (48%) of all teens ages 12-17 said they had been in a car
"when the driver was texting."
- 44% of all adults say they have been in a car when the driver used
the cell phone in a way that put themselves or others in danger. About
the same number of teens (40%) said they had been in a car when the
driver used a cell phone in a dangerous way.
- Beyond driving, one in six (17%) cell-owning adults say they have
physically bumped into another person or an object because they were
distracted by talking or texting on their phone. That amounts to 14% of
all American adults who have been so engrossed in talking, texting or
otherwise using their cell phones that they bumped into something or
someone.

5 Reasons Your Mom Wants an iPad
The Atlantic Monthly's Daniel Indiviglio says:
"A couple with whom I am acquainted bought an iPad. They're both
around 60-years-old. One still doesn't know how to check his cell phone
voicemail. The other can't install a computer program without being
walked through the process by her 25-year-old daughter. They
subsequently told an even less computer-savvy couple in their late 50s
how much they love the new device, and they too began considering
buying one."
"In fact, whether you're a Generation Xer or Millennial, chances are
that your mom wants an iPad for the following reasons:"
- It isn't that hard to use.
- She doesn't need it for work.
- She doesn't know any better.
- Her girl friend has one.
- She can afford it.

How to Make Your Own Moleskine iPad Case
The Modern Day Pirates' Brandon says:
"Putting a case around an Apple product gives me mixed emotions.
Apple puts so much devotion into designing their products that every
detail has been thought about. Holding a bare iPhone or iPad, it just
feels right, the only thing they don't seem to take into consideration
is: what if it is dropped, what if it is put in a bag, what if it rests
on a rough surface, what if its in a pocket with keys? A case is
needed....
"The DODOcase is everything I
wanted out of iPad protection. It is light, let's the Apple product
stand out, protects the screen, and feels like a book when held (gives
the e-reading experience a little old school flare [sic])
. . . The problem? They are handmade, so have a 4-6 week wait
(add another week for shipping) and they cost $49.95 with
shipping....
"I watched the video they have posted on their site about how they
made the cases and had a little brainstorm. Having gone to school for
graphic design, I had taken a class in traditional bookbinding and the
process they use to make the cases is that same exact process. I went
to my favorite book binding supply website, Hollander's and did a run
down of cost . . . The end result is a case that looks
similar to the Dodo Case minus the routed-out bamboo, and only cost $20
in materials...."

Study Looks at Potential Health Effects of
Multitouch Devices
An ASU [Arizona State University] news release says that Kanav
Kahol, an assistant professor in ASU's Biomedical Informatics
Department, is leading team of researchers in a project to measure the
amount of strain on the hands and wrists of individuals who use
multitouch electronic devices, like Apple's iPad. They will use cyber
gloves to measure the kinematic features produced while interacting
with multitouch systems.
The release notes that the evolution of computer systems has freed
us from keyboards and now is focusing on multitouch systems, those
finger-flicking, intuitive and easy-to-learn computer manipulations
that speed the use of any electronic device from cell phones to iPads.
But little is known about the long-term stresses on our bodies through
the use of these systems.

New Compose Interface for Gmail on iPad
PR: In April 2009, we announced a new version of Gmail for
mobile for iOS and Android. Among the improvements was a complete
redesign of the web application's underlying code which allows us to
more rapidly develop and release new features that users have been
asking for, as explained in our first post. We'd like to introduce The
Iterative Web App, a series where we will continue to release features
for Gmail for mobile. Today: New Compose Interface on the iPad.
NewCompose.png
Today we're happy to announce an improved experience for writing
emails on Gmail web interface for iPad. When you write an email you'll
now get a big full screen compose window instead of splitting the
screen between your inbox and the compose view. More text is visible at
once and there are no more distractions with messages on the side.
We've also fixed problems that prevented scrolling on long messages.
Thanks to everyone who reported the issue via the 'Send feedback'
feature at the bottom of the screen.
OldAndNewCompose.jpg
We're continuing to experiment with the large touchscreen and tablet
form factor so send more feedback if you have suggestions. To try out
Gmail on the iPad, just go to gmail.com in Safari. Please note that the
new interface is only available in US English for now.

iBreviary Catholic Liturgical Missal for iPad
PR: Christian worship - now there's an app. for that.
The Vatican's Rev. Paolo Padrini, by day a consultant with the
Pontifical Council for Social Communications, has developed the
iBreviary, a free iApp that can be used in lieu of the traditional hard
copy Catholic liturgical missal at mass. The iPad application is
similar to an iPhone app Fr. Padrini developed two years ago but
additionally contains the complete missal - the entire liturgy used for
Mass throughout the annual Church calendar.
The Bible constitutes without doubt part of this common patrimony: a
patrimony to be known, to recover and from which to draw, not only as
Christians.
The biblical Psalms - contained inside the prayer of the Catholic
Breviary - are born from the daily comparison of a People with their
God inside the concrete situations of life; the Psalms become now hymns
of praise, cries of help, complaints of human desperation, search of
help in God.
The Church in the centuries wanted to recover these important
prayers, building a "book of daily prayer", denominated "Breviary".
iBreviary constitutes a new form, actual and at the same time
anchored to the tradition, of easy and intuitive fruition, of this
daily prayer.
iBreviary will allow the Catholic Christian believer to pray with
simplicity through an intuitive interface. Every day, connecting with
the iPhone, the daily prayers of the Catholic Breviary will be
proposed. Obviously through the touch screen of the terminal Apple.
iBreviary will be for every man who wants to feed his own
spirituality to find a useful help for the reflection and the
meditation.
iBreviary will allow everybody to approach with greater frequency to
the texts of the Bible, universal patrimony of culture and
spirituality.

iSkin Duo and iSkin Vu Bring Microban
Antimicrobial, Hypoallergenic Protection, Functional Design, and Style
to Apple iPad
PR: iSkin Inc. has announced the release of its protective
covers for the Apple iPad - the iSkin Duo and the iSkin Vu.
"We're proud of our reputation for delivering unique and beautiful
products," said Andrew Ackloo, President and CEO of iSkin. "The iPad's
size presented us with some unique challenges, so the engineering on
both the Duo and Vu was refined and tweaked multiple times to provide
our customers with what they expect from us - the best possible fit,
functionality and design. The results are protectors that allow
themselves to integrate naturally on the iPad."
iskinduo.jpg
The iSkin Duo is a low-profile, dock friendly way to guard and
enhance the Apple iPad. It is designed specifically for those seeking
complete protection for their iPad at home, work or school
environments. Available in a variety of two-tone color options, the
Duo's vibrant body color is fused with a front-facing black screen
frame surfaced with an embossed designer pattern. It is also equipped
with side grips for better handling, an earphone port cover and fully
protected volume, home and sleep buttons.
iskinmicroban.jpg
As the market pioneer in delivering enhanced silicone protection for
digital devices, iSkin created the Duo for iPad from premium silicone
that is both hypoallergenic and free of chemicals like bisphenol-A,
phthalates, latex and PVC, making it a safe option for those with
immune sensitivities and small children. The silicone has been treated
with a low-dust and low-lint finish that helps to resist the natural
tendencies of silicone to attract small particles. In addition, the Duo
is embedded with Microban* antimicrobial protection, exclusive to
iSkin, that which works continuously to inhibit the growth of bacteria
and fungus that cause odor and staining. This silicone protector is an
excellent way of protecting the iPad against impact, moisture, dirt,
sweat and grease and can be easily removed and cleaned. If required,
the Duo can be sterilized with hot water without losing its impeccable
fit and shape.
The iSkin Vu is designed for those who seek an elegant way to
personalize their iPad through color and design, without sacrificing
function and protection. The Vu features a hybrid design that elegantly
incisions next-generation, environmentally friendly soft plastic with a
beautifully patterned hard plastic shield. Together, they combine for a
truly beautiful look that fully encapsulates and protects the entire
iPad against impact, scratches and other hazards.
The Vu features a unique and cleverly designed rear-bottom hatch
that can be easily removed to allow the iPad to dock with the Apple
iPad Keyboard or Standard Dock without ever having to remove the
product. The hatch also includes a charging cable opening with an

The Acme Made Hardback Folio offers a perfect blend of style and
protection with a book-like protective cover and a removable,
custom-molded silicone skin. The outer cover is crafted with classic
book linen, providing the authentic feel of a hardcover book. The
silicone skin utilizes Acme Made's ButtonDown technology, allowing the
device to be easily and securely buttoned into the cover and quickly
removed for convenience. The Hardback Folio DX also has a unique system
for reading in "handsfree" or landscape mode whereby the cover can be
folded back and secured with the elastic strap, turning it into an
easel for horizontal display. Its thin design and quality construction
make the Hardback Folio a beautiful complement to Amazon's Kindle and
Kindle DX. Hardback Folio $39.99, Hardback Folio DX $49.99.
Designed for the road warrior, the Acme Made Slick Case is a
compact, zippered case with an internal divider to store cables or
accessories. The e-reader can be secured into the Slick Case for
book-style reading, or it can be used purely as a protective, zippered
travel case. The Slick Case is designed with Acme Made's unique
StretchShell neoprene that is both water and stain resistant while
still offering the padding of traditional neoprene. The Slick Case is
available in two sizes and fits a variety of devices including the
iPad, Amazon Kindle, Sony's latest e-readers, and the new Nook from
Barnes & Noble. Slick Case iPad $39.99, Slick Case $29.99, Slick
Case DX $34.99.
For the size conscious, the Skinny Sleeve is the thinnest sleeve
available with a protective screen insert sewn directly into the
lining. The Skinny Sleeve is crafted from StretchShell neoprene which
forms a protective sheath around the device. It's an incredibly
protective solution with an ultra thin profile. The Skinny Sleeve is
available in two sizes to fit a variety of e-readers. Skinny Sleeve
iPad $29.99, Skinny Sleeve $19.99, Skinny Sleeve DX $24.99.
