Can an iPad 2 Replace a 13" MacBook Pro?

Macs Only's Bill Fox has posted an interesting ramble on an ongoing downsizing trend in his own digital journey, chronicling how he's migrated from desktop computers to 17" PowerBooks to a 15" MacBook Pro, then a MacBook Air, a 13" MacBook Pro, and is now wondering if he can transition again to the iPad 2.

Fox notes that he didn't buy an original iPad largely because he didn't think it could replace a notebook in enough situations, but that the iPad 2's enhanced feature set (FaceTime camera and thinner/lighter/faster) and a year of software development have changed the game enough to change his mind - at least enough to give a try at going lighter. But just how good it will be in a business environment is an open question. Can the iPad 2 replace Fox's 13" MacBook Pro for enough business trips to make it worthwhile?

He notes that at this point it does look like the iPad 2 might be able to serve as his sole computing device when he travels if he's careful about assessing his requirements on a trip by trip basis, but he need to really do it to see for sure, and he'll report soon on use of the iPad 2 after traveling with it as his sole computing device.

Replace Your Laptop with an iPad: The Ultimate Guide

TCGeeks' Shane asks:

"Would you like to replace your laptop with your iPad? You may have been reading a lot about the iPad and the iPad 2. You may have also read that its mainly a consumption device and not really something you can use as a laptop replacement. Well . . . not everyone can actually do this but if you want to benefit from the small size, lighter weight, and longer battery of the iPad, then here is how you can get rid of your laptop and replace it with your iPad or your iPad 2."

Editor's note: I remain skeptical about the practicality of attempting to replace a laptop with an iPad as a serious work tool, but if you want to give it a crack, Shane has provided a good, comprehensive overview of what you will encounter, and workarounds.

AnandTech's iPad 2 Review Goes Deep

If you're looking for the exhaustive, authoritative iPad 2 review, Brian Klug, Anand Lal Shimpi, and Vivek Gowri's AnandTech opus is it.

Of particular interest to those weighing the pros and cons of buying a remaindered iPad 1 at a deep discount, as opposed to buying (and perhaps waiting for) an iPad 2, will be an inline video demonstrating the effect of iPad 2's RAM being doubled from iPad 1, but there is a vast amount more in this review.

AppleInsider Reviews iPad 2 Running iOS 4.3

AppleInsider's Daniel Eran Dilger's iPad 2 review isn't quite as lengthy and detailed as AnandTech's review, but it covers all the bases as well less prolix-ly. Dilger notes that along with its impressive hardware, there are a few iPad 2 weak spots and a couple rough edges in its current software release.

Dilger observes that "while certainly a personal computer, iPad is so different from what we expect of a PC that it actually makes sense to call it a 'post-PC' device. This is the computer for people who want to use technology, not manage meta-technology, [and] as long as you approach iPad as a post-PC device rather than expecting it to be a drop in replacement for a PC (whether a notebook or netbook or Slate PC-like device), few of the iPad's limitations will irk you."

MacInTouch's iPad 2 Review

MacInTouch's Robert Mohns has posted an exhaustive review of Apple's new iPad 2, based on a 32 GB white WiFi iPad 2 review unit, noting that white models are reportedly selling much more quickly than black ones, and finding white less prone to smudging from hand contact.

He reports that since the iPad 2 is thinner and has a different shape from its predecessor's, he didn't expect it to work with the original Dock and Keyboard Dock, but he found that the old Docks do fit, albeit a bit loosely.

Mohns reports that using the iPad 2 is an absolute delight - like the original iPad but even better, and feels much faster than the iPad 1, especially when launching apps, multitasking, browsing the Web, and that the iPad 2 feels even faster in operation, because it can keep more apps in memory, ready to go instantly.

But those are just a couple of snapshot snippets from this very long and thorough review.

iPad 2 vs. iPad 1 and iPhone 4

Bare Feats' Rob-Art Morgan reports:

"We finally got some hands-on time with the iPad 2. Here's a summary of what we've learned so far running various benchmarks....

"The iPad 2 is significantly faster running CPU and GPU intensive functions. Some simple graphics functions were not faster. And memory tests showed no gains...."

iPad 2 Is 'Stupid Fast'

ipadcto.com's bfrench says:

Geometry benchmark"To quote a commonly used NASCAR term iPad 2 is stupid fast, and the facts are pretty clear this dog can hunt. Sorry, I need to dial back the NASCAR lingo.

"Matched against Motorola Xoom and iPad 1, the tests show significant performance coming in the new streamlined version of the magical tablet. That said, there's only two reasons (in my view) to consider an upgrade from the original iPad cameras and performance."

He also posts a graph providing perspective on just how much better iPad 2 handles mobile processing.

Apple Considers Paying Higher Prices to Secure Supply of Touchscreen Panels

DigiTimes' Yenting Chen and Yvonne Yu report that in order to secure a sufficient supply of touchscreen panels for iPad and iPhone production, Apple has "talked with Taiwan-based makers, considering some room for them to hike quotes," according to sources in those companies.

The authors note that in order to achieve its internal shipment goal of 40 million units of iPad in 2011, Apple has booked over 60% of the industry's total touchscreen panel capacity, and that despite some supply concerns caused by the Japan earthquake, making room for price hikes will help smooth the supply of screens for the hot-selling devices.

iPad 3 in September?

IT Wire's Alex Zaharov-Reutt notes that with the iPad 2 making its debut in much of the world, the anti-iPad crowd has revved up talk of the iPad 3, and some are advising that you might be able to pick up an iPad 3 in September. But is a 2011 release date really realistic?

Editor's Note: This iPad 3 in September rumor was making the rounds a few weeks back, before the US iPad 2 release. My deduction is that whatever fire there is under the speculation smoke is probably being generated by confusion with a likely new (larger?) iPod touch product being readied for Apple's customary early fall iPod refreshment. It's plausible that if an NFC chip is included in the upcoming iPhone 5 (release expected for early summer), the iPad 2 might get a mini-refresh come fall to add that, but I'm skeptical that we'll see iPad 3 before next February.

Apple iOS 4.3.1 Expected Shortly

BGR's Jonathan S. Geller reports:

"We've just been given some info on Apple's next iOS release, 4.3.1, and from what we have been told, it will contain minor bug fixes. Here are the changes from iOS 4.3...."

Apple Boots 'Gay Cure' App

Forbes blogger Jeff Bercovici notes that supporters of gay rights are celebrating a successful effort to pressure Apple into removing from its store a controversial app created by a group that works to free gay people of their sexual orientation, after more than 140,000 people signed a petition at Change.org calling for the app, created by Exodus International, to be removed.

However Bercovici observes that if the standard is going to be that Apple will remove an item from the App Store if enough people object to it, the company is going to be seeing a lot more petitions, noting that the religious conservatives who found themselves on the losing end of this culture-war skirmish have been taking notes and are already at work drawing up a list of all the gay-themed apps that are offensive to their beliefs.

The blogger suggests that the gay rights lobby's evidently selective distaste for censorship is "bafflingly short-sighted."

Publisher's note: Low End Mac is not taking sides on issues of gay rights or gender reorientation. We expressed concern in February 2010 when Apple began removing "sexy apps" from the App Store, and again when it pulled the Manhattan Declaration app over the Thanksgiving 2010 weekend after it had previously approved it. Apple is in danger of painting itself into a corner if it tries to impose California culture and morality on the rest of the nation, not to mention the rest of the world. This is especially true when the same content can be accessed on iDevices with Safari. Think different: Apple should not be playing Big Brother. dk

Apple Pulls Christian 'Gay Cure' App

Cult of Mac's Nicole Martinelli reports that Apple appear to have responded to the outcry over an app from Christian group Exodus International by removing it from iTunes, but that the real issue is that Apple has no coherent policy about what kind of content gets approved and remains in iTunes.

Exodus International Accuses Apple of Discrimination and Suppressing Diversity in Pulling Its iPhone App

PR: In a media release, Exodus International spokesman Randy Thomas says that Apple has informed its developers that the global Christian ministry's iOS app, which had provided mobile access to the information available on the Exodus website that Apple had originally approved and given a 4+ rating, has now been deemed offensive to large groups of people and removed from the App Store.

Thomas notes that it appears Apple has caved, yet again, to gay advocacy pressure. Last November, Apple removed an application, also initially given a 4+ rating, submitted by The Manhattan Declaration, a group of Christian leaders who support orthodox Christian biblical teaching on marriage, as a result of pressure from the same gay activist groups.

"We are extremely disappointed to learn of Apple's decision to deny equal representation in the public square," comments Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, in the press release. "Discrimination of thought and belief obstructs essential dialogue and authentic diversity." Chambers also observes that Apple provides hundreds of apps specific to the GLBT community and has made the Gay Christian Networks podcasts available on its iTunes store.

"Ultimately, this issue comes down to what we, as a culture, believe about equality and the freedom to express our beliefs," said Chambers. "It is our hope that Apple will reconsider its decision and allow our organization to be part of the ongoing conversation about the challenging issues many face today."

iPod Repair Company Offers New Level of Service

PR: Kansas City-based Mission Repair specializing in in iPod, iPad, iPhone, and laptop computer repair services, has released their new "Got Repair" program announcing lifetime repairs on many of their services.

"What good is a lifetime warranty on a service if you have to pay full price again if you break you device again?" says Mission Repair president Ryan Arter. "I created the 'Got Repair' program to give customers peace of mind when shopping for their next iPad repair or MacBook repair. I want Mission Repair to be there for the customer if they break or damage the unit again. In most cases, our customers have already had a bad experience with breakage of dropped units - that's why we are in business. Since we see repeat customers, I wanted to design a program for this situation."

Mission Repair's "Got Repair" program can be explained simply:

  1. Think of it as "The Real Lifetime Warranty". Check the competition. When they offer lifetime warranties, this doesn't include breakage again on the part you had repaired. What good is a lifetime warranty on a piece of glass that only fails when it breaks? Our "Got Repair" program covers re-repairing damaged glass and screens.
  2. Think of it as a "Thank You" for coming back to Mission Repair. If you have your device repaired with us, you already know that it can be broken. And if you should somehow accidentally or intentionally damage it again, we want you to come back to Mission Repair. We would make more money by charging you full price but you may decide not to repair your device more than once. Our "Got Repair" program benefits encourage repeat business with a special thank you to every Mission Repair customer.
  3. Think of it as the "New Standard" in which services should be performed. Mission Repair pioneers many programs and we set the standard for the market.
  4. Think of it as the opposite of "Insurance". Insurance is just that. You buy insurance "in case" something happens to your unit. If nothing happens, you still pay. Additionally, most insurance plans require a deductible and stringent rules to filing a claim. Our "Got Repair" benefits cost you nothing up front. Rather, we charge a small service fee for any repeat repair. You can have the unit re-repaired once or 1000 times, this service fee will remain the same.

Mission Repair offers "Got Repair" benefits on many of their services. If you use Mission Repair and ever break or damage the part again, they will repair it again. The company claims that no other business in the market offers this advantage. See the website for details.

Mission Repair offers full-service iPad, iPod, MacBook, and cell phone repair services. Mission Repair currently offers repair services for iPods, iPhones, Apple laptop computers (including MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, MacBook, PowerBook and iBook), gaming consoles (including PSP), cell phones with new programs coming online often.

Mission Repair is Accredited though the Greater Kansas City Better Business Bureau and is a proud member of the Olathe, Kansas Chamber of Commerce. They employ Apple Certified Macintosh Technicians.

With a 100% customer service mentality, Mission Repair is a one-stop repair service center with support for all makes and models of iPods, iPhones, and Macintosh portable systems, cell phones & gaming consoles.
