Grandpa's iPad

This is a hoot. The 30 second video's dialogue is in Dutch, but it doesn't matter. You'll get the drift.

New iPad: More System Memory, No Additional CPU Speed

iPad 3 Geekbench scoresThe Vietnamese blogsite Tinh T  has gotten hold of a third-generation iPad and run Geekbench software to measure its performance. It turns out that the biggest change is that the third generation machine is equipped with 1 GB of RAM, double the the iPad 2's memory capacity and quadruple that of the original iPad, while the A5X CPU is still clocked at 1 GHz.

Consequently, what with the new, ultrahigh resolution display likely to be a memory-hog, anyone upgrading from an iPad 2 and expecting a significant performance boost is likely to be disappointed in that aspect, as the Geekbench score is almost the same as for iPad 2.

Who Should Buy the New iPad (and Who Shouldn't)

Cnet's Donald Bell has posted a commendably sensible, dispassionate analysis of whether it makes sense to upgrade to Apple's third-generation iPad or not, noting that the new tablet is beautiful, but it might not be the perfect fit for everyone.

iPhoto: Why Give Away Something You Can Sell It?

Hardmac's Lionel notes that with the new iPad, one of the main announcement was that iPhoto has been developed for iOS and represents real progress compared to the default photo app that comes on all iOS devices, constituting one more step in increasing the ability of the tablet to produce content to make it even more autonomous.

However, he says he and his colleagues were disappointed to discover at the end of the presentation that it is selling for $4.99 on the App Store and is not even preinstalled on the new tablets, noting that until now, the latest version of iLife has come installed on every new Mac, but apparently Apple is not giving away anything for iOS. "After all why give away something that you can sell?"

It also makes him apprehensive that iLife could soon disappear from the Mac and be available only through the Mac App Store without the "free" update included in the price of the new Mac.

iPad 2 Far More Likely to Break Than Original iPad

PR: SquareTrade's Peter Pachal says that if you're on the fence about whether to buy a new third-generation iPad or pick up an iPad 2 now that it's cheaper, you might want to seriously consider getting an AppleCare+ protection plan. Pachal notes that a new actuarial survey conducted by independent warranty provider SquareTrade shows that Apple's tablet has become more breakable over the past two years, with the iPad 2 3.5 times as likely to break due to accidental damage as the original iPad.

2012 iPad Breakage ReportSquareTrade surveyed 50,000 iPad owners, with 9.8% of iPad 2 owners reporting accidental damage to their tablet in the first year compared with 2.8% of iPad 1 owners.

While no definitive reason for the greater incidence of accidental damage with iPad 2 was identified, Pachal says possible suspects would be:

  1. Design: Besides being thinner, the iPad 2s glass is exposed slightly above the bevel, while on the original iPad, the aluminum frame protected it more efficiently. In addition, the curved edge of the iPad 2 makes an impact much more likely to damage the screen compared with the iPad 1's flatter edge.
  2. [Ironically} - the Smart Cover: The survey observes that Apple's Smart Cover, introduced with the iPad 2, "may be contributing to breakage rates" instead of preventing them, noting that some owners have tried to "grab" the Smart Cover on a falling device, which can make the situation worse since the cover attaches magnetically, and isn't intended as a fall protector. Further evidence is that of the iPad 2 owners surveyed, 72% had some kind of cover on the tablet when they broke it, with 33% of those using a Smart Cover.

The top-five causes of iPad breakage reported by respondents were:

  • Dropped during use - 54%
  • Falling off a table - 15%.
  • Car-related incidents - 11%
  • Misuse by a child - 8%
  • Damage caused by pets - 1%

Clarifying Display Issues on the New iPad

PR: NPD DisplaySearch Blog's Richard Shim notes that the new iPad revision Apple announced last week has several new noteworthy features including an A5X processor, its iSight 5 megapixel camera (similar to the 8 megapixel one used in the iPhone 4S), voice dictation capability, 4G LTE cellular connectivity, but the highlighted and most anticipated feature is the display, which at 2048 x 1536 pixels has a pixel density of 264 ppi, twice that of the iPad 2.

Shim notes that while Apple is calling this a Retina display, its pixel density is actually significantly less than that of the iPhone 4's Retina display, which is 326 ppi. However, since "Retina Display" is a marketing term with no specific definition, Apple is able to use it however it wants.* He also observes that another term Apple seems to be applying loosely is IPS, which stands for in-plane switching, a wide viewing angle architecture. However, it is likely that some of its suppliers are using fringe field switching (FFS) rather than IPS. So, perhaps retina display really means high performance display.

The display has been a challenge to manufacture, Shim reports, noting that according to NPD DisplaySearch's research, Sharp, Samsung, and LG Display are all suppliers of the new display, and that the situation at Sharp has been a major source of speculation ever since the company announced a new strategy for producing oxide TFT displays last April.

"Our understanding is that Sharp has been producing samples of the iPad 3 display using IGZO TFTs, but it is not clear whether the quality or manufacturing yields are acceptable to Apple and Sharp," Shim says. "There has been speculation that Sharp has switched back to a-Si TFT production while they work on the IGZO process; meanwhile, our research indicates that Samsung and LG Display are producing the new panels using a-Si TFT. It has been a challenge using this technology, as 264 ppi is believed to be the upper limit of pixel density for a-Si TFT.

"Regardless of the TFT technology, the doubling of the pixel density means a significantly smaller aperture ratio, which means that a brighter backlight is needed. Our research indicates that the iPad 3 panel has at least twice as many LEDs than the iPad 2, which had 36. Even allowing for increases in LED efficiency, this most likely means a significant increase in power consumption for the panel. The slightly larger and heavier case as compared to the iPad 2 suggests Apple is using a larger battery (see below) in order to accommodate the new A5X processor with its upgraded GPU and the high resolution display without decreasing battery life.

"Apple does an exceptional job of making technology relevant to consumers, so it will be interesting to see if consumers get excited about the higher image quality on the new iPad. If so, it could be difficult for Apple to secure an adequate supply of panels, given the manufacturing challenges. The company finally achieved supply/demand parity for iPad 2 shipments in the second half of last year. How quickly panel suppliers are able to ramp up production will be the ultimate determining factor in terms of meeting the typical surge in demand associated with new Apple products."

* Publisher's note: Apple actually does define it: "The Retina display's pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels." There can be no fixed pixel-per-inch definition, since viewing distance is also a factor. Mathematically, one arcminute is about the limit of the human eye's resolution, and according to Richard Gaywood's math on TUAW, the new iPad exceeds that by 23% at the typical viewing distance of 16". dk

New iPad's Most Revolutionary Feature Is Its Battery

ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes says that the new iPad's most revolutionary feature isn't the 2048 x 1536 Retina display LCD panel or the 4G LTE connectivity. It's something that you can't see - the battery - noting that between the release of the iPad 2 last year and the new iPad this month, Apple managed to nearly doubled the tablet's battery capacity, taking it from 25 Wh to a massive 42 Wh (measured in milliamps, boosting the battery capacity from 6944 mAh to a monstrous 11,666 mAh), which is why Apple is still able to claim a 10 hour battery life rating even with the power-sucking new Retina display, and it also explains why the new iPad is bigger and heavier than the iPad 2, although the slight increases in size and weight can't account for the massive improvement in capacity.

The New iPad Is Almost All Battery

9 to 5 Mac's Jordan Kahn notes that the new iPad is powered by a 42.5 watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery with 70% more capacity than the iPad 2's 25 watt-hour battery, with the extra capacity going towards powering the Retina display, LTE-capabilities, and the quad-core graphics in Apple's new A5X chip. The A5X is also rumored to have double the RAM, which would also require additional power. Kahn muses that one unanswered question is whether the new iPads 70% larger battery will take longer to charge.

Publisher's note: The laws of physics don't change, so when using the same power source, whether a standard USB port or Apple's 2.1 Ah power block, the new iPad will take about 70% longer to charge from an equally depleted state. dk

Demand for New iPad Shakes Up Corporate Market

PR: A recent ChangeWave Research survey of 1,604 business IT buyers shows the new iPad is already having a powerful impact on the corporate tablet market.

Going forward, better than one-in-five companies (22%) say they'll be purchasing tablets for their employees during 2nd Quarter 2012, and the percentage reporting they'll buy Apple iPads has jumped to the highest level of corporate iPad demand ever seen in a ChangeWave survey.

Future corporate iPad buyers

A total of 84% of companies planning to buy tablets next quarter now say they'll purchase iPads a 7-pt leap since the previous survey.

The impending release of the new, third-generation iPad is also having an impact on business purchases of tablets made by other manufacturers. The ChangeWave survey shows an across-the-board decline in next quarter buying of tablets from other manufacturers.

corporate tablet demand

Among the competitors, Samsung (8%) is down 2 pts and continues to remain a distant second in planned tablet buying.

Other tablet manufacturers showing a decline in corporate tablet share since the previous survey include HP (4%; down 1-pt), Asus (3%; down 1-pt), Dell (3%; down 2 pts), and RIM/Blackberry (3%; down 2 pts).

Corporate Tablets and Wireless Providers

ChangeWave also asked respondents from companies planning to buy tablets next quarter which wireless service if any their company will be using.

future corporate wireless service providers for tablets

AT&T (30%; up 1-pt) and Verizon (29%; up 1-pt) are in a near dead heat as the top choice for wireless service among companies buying tablets, while Sprint (4%; unchanged) remains a distant third.

Rumor Roundup

DigiTimes: Apple Likely to Use Slim Bezel Displays in 7.85" iPad

DigiTimes' Siu Han and Steve Shen reports that according to sources in the upstream supply chain, Apple is expected to adopt slim bezel displays for 7.85" iPads rumored to be coming later this year, in order to increase the viewing area of the compact tablets, and that while 7.85" iPads may have Retina displays, it is likely to use IPS/FFS panels from LG Display and probably AU Optronics, and be sold at likely price points in the $249-$299 Range

Han and Shen also note that Samsung is expected to launch its next generation 7" and 10.1" Galaxy Tab tablet PCs soon.

Samsung Official Confirms 7.85" iPad Coming

The Korea Times' Kim Yoo-chul reports that Apple is planning to buy as much as a record $11 billion worth of parts from Samsung Electronics this year. That's according to a Samsung official, who preferred to remain anonymous, noting that while "The amount of the current contract is around $9.7 billion," the amount may go up to $11 billion, depending on demand for Apple products, and is expected to increase until at least 2014 under the terms of the current contract between the two companies. The official added that Apple products' popularity lines Samsung's pockets as well. Samsung makes the A5X CPUs, and Samsung's QXGA panel is used in the third-generation iPad. Apple bought $7.8 billion worth of components from Samsung in 2011. including displays, mobile application processors (APs), NAND flash chips. and mobile DRAMs - making it Samsung's single biggest customer as well as its patent litigation nemesis.

Frenemies indeed. Yoo-chul cites Samsung's memory unit boss Jun Dong-soo commenting recently: "We don't see any negative impact on the partnership with Apple because of the legal issues.''

The unnamed official also revealed what appears to be insider confirmation that a smaller, 7.85" iPad is a go for later this year, cited commenting that "The contract is expected to rise to $11 billion by the end of this year, as Apple is planning to release a smaller iPad, probably with a 7.85-inch screen, and to sell more of its MacBook Air PCs using Samsung's faster solid state drive (SSD) storage."

The Competition

Windows 8 Could Threaten the iPad's Dominance

PR: Apple's announcement of their new third-generation iPad with available 4G support is expected to be another major market success, begging the question of whether there will ever be any real tablet computer competition for Apple. The answer may be at hand with the coming release of Windows 8.

While most new devices don't make the cut, Microsoft's new Windows 8 is said to be the closest rival to the newest iPad - and may actually beat the iPad in some ways, according to tech expert Karl Volkman of SRV Network, Inc., who offers his insight into the matter by highlighting three key features of Windows 8:

  1. Windows 8 is more customizable: The technology lets you personalize tools and tiles on the Start screen by moving and naming them. You can also save your favorite websites and tools to the screen, making it more personal to you.
  2. Internet Explorer 10 is the fastest Internet browser: Not only does this mean you can upload your favorite websites in just seconds; but also, you can easily click out of unused sites faster. Internet Explorer 10 is proven to be the fastest on the market, says Volkman.
  3. Windows 8 can hold more devices: With the Devices function, Windows 8 makes it easier to access multiple files and add-ons in a single domain. You can add as many devices as you want at any given time.

SRV Network Inc. is a Microsoft Gold Certified partner that offers a variety of IT services, including a variety of flexible service packages ranging from as-needed technical help to intensive, regular on-site work. They specialize in Network Design and Implementation, Network Maintenance and Monitoring, Disaster Recovery and Prevention and IP Telephony.

Publisher's note: HP couldn't compete with the iPad using webOS on its own hardware, and RIM fared almost as poorly with its tablet. Only one Android tablet is selling well, and Amazon.com is rumored to lose money on every Kindle Fire it sells. How Microsoft expects to succeed making a dent with Windows 8 on tablets when all the competition either has its own OS or is using a free one is beyond me. dk

UNIEA Releases Brand New Cases for the New iPad

PR: Universal Electronic Accessories (UNIEA) has announced the release of a full line of new New iPad cases, directly on the heels of Apple's landmark product launch Wednesday. UNIEA's new New iPad cases span three separate product lines and offer new users a wide selection of styles and designs that fit virtually every need and user style.

UNIEA U-Suit Folio Premium New iPad Case

UNIEA U-Suit Folio Premium New iPad CaseFrom UNIEA's Classic line, the U-Suit Folio Premium has long since been the company's most popular case design, having offered versions of this case for MacBooks, iPods, iPhones, and iPads. The new U-Suit Folio Premium for the New iPad offers the same rich leather appointments, innovative flip-open folio cover that doubles as a fold-up stand, a snug fit, custom cutouts for all ports and buttons, and an embossed UNIEA logo. The new U-Suit Folio Premium is specifically designed to fit the new specs and dimensions of the New iPad.

UNIEA Rebelution Straightedge + Rebelution Skidboard

The UNIEA Rebelution Skidboard New iPad folio case puts a minimalist, durable case around the New iPad for stylish protection against a daily routine that moves at breakneck speed. ABS plastic and muted nylon makes lends an understated look, while the rounded, reinforced edges and secure fastener keeps the folio cover securely in place. The folio adds an unmatched level of protection to your iPads screen, and doubles as a versatile folding stand so that you can put your iPad in the most ergonomic position for typing, watching videos, and more. And for as tough as the Skidboard is on the outside, a soft, velvet style interior lining wont ever scratch the iPad. Custom cutouts give access to the dock, buttons, and camera sensor while providing maximum coverage and protection.

But for those who love the look and feel of the iPad and really don't want to ruin its vibe with a big, bulky case, then the Straitedge on UNIEA's Rebelution line offers a unique alternative. The Straitedge offers just the bare minimum of protection and features for the New iPad while keeping it slim, sharp, and stylin'. A tough ABS plastic shell with nylon appointments snaps snugly on the back of your iPad, protecting its rear from scratches, dings, and drops, while a fold-out kick stand lets you set up your iPad for ideal typing and video watching. The edgy black design of the Straightedge gives full access to the camera, buttons, and dock, and really shows off the personal style of the user, while still retaining the look and feel of the iPad on the front.

Rebelution StreetArt, Dot Series, and Deluxe Series New iPad Back Covers

UNIEA's Back Covers for the New iPad are a fun, unique way of transforming the look of the New iPad while giving it just the right amount of protection it needs in just the right place. UNIEA's New iPad back covers are constructed of durable polycarbonate plastic and feature a unique IMD process that ensures the graphics remain fresh-looking and scratch-free. The Back Cover is designed to snap securely onto the back of the New iPad, and features precision cutouts for the iPads dock, buttons, and camera sensor.

The back cover will come in a variety of different designs, including a StreetArt, Dot Series, and Deluxe series set of designs.

All of these new New iPad case options are available at uniea.com and will be making their rounds throughout the tech media for review as the New iPad is released.
