April 26 in Low End Mac History
April 25 - April 27
2000
2001
- From Luddite to Low End Mac,
Beverly Woods, Acoustic Mac. How a solar Luddite and acoustic
musician became a Mac user.
- The best really low budget
Macs, Heather Anne Hurd, My Turn. Power Macs are nice, but
these eminently usable Macs are even cheaper.
- PowerBook 145b, Jeff Adkins, Mac
Lab Report. An example of just how useful an older PowerBook can be
when your newer 'Book's been stolen.
- Virtual cutting room, Matthew
Urban, Matt's Mac. Editing and exporting movies on an older
Mac.
2002
- Macs, New Zealand, and
Darwinism, Dirk Pilat, Down But Not Out, 04.26. Yes, there are
Macs in New Zealand, but do they really promote godless
Darwinism?
- Hands on: Palm Desktop 4.0,
Adam Robert Guha, Apple Archive. "Even if you don't have a Palm,
you can use Palm Desktop, and I highly recommend it."
- 800 MHz PowerBook expected, Zip
module for Lombard and Pismo, refurb iPods, and more,
Charles Moore. G4/800 rumors, Zip and CD-RW modules, case for 14"
iBook, refurb iPods, SCSI and ethernet PC Cards, and bargain
'Books.
- Website automation with PHP and
MySQL, part 4, Dan Knight, Online Tech Journal. Using PHP to
display the information in your MySQL database.
2004
- Marketing the Mac: Yes, Macs
are different, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Apple stressed the
wrong thing with the 'Think Different' campaign. It should have
been about how a different computer does the same things as a
Windows PC.
- Maximum eMac RAM, PB 1400
offspring and boot solutions, a nice IE feature, and password
protection in OS X, Charles W Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. Lot
of praise for the PowerBook 1400, how to boot the 1400 from a CD,
booting from Compact Flash, working around password problems in OS
X, and more.
2005
2006
- Hands-on with an iBook leads
to on-the-spot conversion, Paul Brierley, The 'Book Beat. After
years with Windows, the Mac OS provided a mixture of awe at the
graphics, surprise that Office runs, amazement that it works so
easily with digicams and third-party monitors, and disbelief about
the lack of malware.
- Modern computing: First
impressions of a $10 PowerBook G3, Ted Hodges, Vintage Mac
Living. The price was right, assuming it worked, but how beat up
and underpowered would this $10 PowerBook be?
2007
- Apple's digital hub report
card: Current grade, B+, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Apple promised
to make the Mac the hub of the digital lifestyle in 2001. It has
excelled in most areas but barely passes when it comes to mobile
phone support.
- The 12" MacBook Pro: I don't think
so, Trevor Wale, One More Thing. As much as we may love the
12" PowerBook form factor, if Apple were going to release a 12"
MacBook, they would have done so by now.
